6 years on from the release of the GDPR, URM’s senior practitioners will be taking stock of the state of data protection in the UK today in this upcoming URM webinar.  To start, we will be examining where the UK’s supervisory authority, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has been focussing its attention in terms of enforcement actions (of all kinds – not just fines, but enforcement notices, reprimands and warnings) since the GDPR came into force.  We will be identifying, for example, which articles are the most commonly violated.

Having looked at any trends emerging, we will also be examining how the ICO now determines whether to issue a penalty notice for infringements of the data protection legislation, and how it calculates the amount of any fine imposed.  As well as examining its enforcement policies we will provide an update on the latest guidance from the ICO on topics such as employee monitoring (especially those working remotely).

Looking forward, there will be an update on the UK Data Protection and Digital Information Bill (DPDI) which is, currently wending its way through the House of Lords and specifically what the potential impact of this Bill could be should it be enacted in its current form. URM’s senior practitioners will also be assessing the challenges that artificial intelligence (AI) brings and how that can affect your approach to achieving DP compliance?

The webinar will conclude with URM sharing its extensive experiences of working with organisations and common areas of noncompliance.  One specific area we will focus on will be that of compliance with the GDPR’s accountability principle and embedding good practice data protection into business-as-usual activities.

In this webinar, URM will address the following topics:

  • Trends since the GDPR was issued
    - Focus of fines and enforcement actions
  • Update on key developments
    - Potential implications of new UK Data Protection and Digital Information Bill
    - New ICO schedule of fines
    - Updated guidance – monitoring employees at work
    - Impact of AI
  • Common compliance failures and their impact
    - Lack of accountability and privacy management
  • Recommended actions.
