Getting the Balance Right

BS 25999 BCM Programme Management

BS 25999 recommends that in order to deliver effective and efficient BCM every organisation wraps its activities into a Programme Management function to ensure focus, management and maintenance. BCM Programme Management facilitates the establishment of the business continuity capability and its maintenance in a manner appropriate to the size and complexity of the organisation.

One of the first steps in developing a BCMS is to evaluate management’s requirements and level of risk tolerance as well as any requirements from external organisations. A key success criteria factor is the engagement and representation of senior management in the formation of any steering committee providing both business wide focus and evidence of senior management commitment to BC. Other key activities involved in developing the BCMS include:

  • Developing a BCM Policy
  • Determining resources required
  • Determining competency of training and awareness roles
  • Developing documentation management and records processes
